Who is Flourish for?

The enhanced provision unit at Lowe's Wong Junior School is designed to support the needs of children with social, emotional and mental health needs. The provision is for primary aged pupils from key stage 1 and key stage 2. Children will likely significantly exhibit the following:

  • Difficulties in making and retaining friendships.
  • Difficulties in following instructions, accepting adult direction and maintaining focus on tasks.
  • An unusual response to some sensory stimuli.  For example, may find noisy/busy classroom environments dysregulating.
  • Evidence of rigid thought, making the pupil inflexible and unlikely to cope with change, resulting in significant signs of stress and anxiety.
  • Struggles to access the mainstream classroom.
  • Struggles to access a full-time curriculum.
  • Anxiety related non-attendance.
  • Difficulty in identifying and then understanding their emotions.

Schools applying for a Flourish placement must be able to demonstrate tier 3 intervention is in place and has been implemented alongside a well-structured graduated response over time.

Capacity and staffing

  • Fluorish EPU @LWJ has space for 8 pupils at any given time.
  • Each pupil will be offered a bespoke timetable of sessions each week.  They will not attend full time.
  • Sessions are each for 2 hours. There is one morning session and one afternoon session each day.
  • Each place is time-bound. The pupil will end their time at Flourish when they are ready to access their home school's education full-time or if the placement has to be called to a close due to other wider concerns.
  • A specialist teacher and two specialist teaching assistants will be working with pupils each day.
  • Leaders at Lowe's Wong Juniors support the effective running of the EPU on a day-to-day basis.

Partnerships

  • Flourish EPU is led and managed  in partnership with Minster Trust for Education. They support the ongoing development of the provision, quality assurance, adminstration and training for staff.
  • Nottinghamshire Local Authority provide funding and are engaged with the quality assurance of Flourish EPU.
  • Family SENCOs for both the Newark family of schools and Minster (Southwell) family of schools support the placement of pupils and the development of provision.
  • The School Behaviour and Attendance Partnership for the area fully supports the provision and decision making for placements.
