Ulster Rugby Visit MITRE Rehabilitation Unit
On Wednesday 28th September, the Ulster Rugby squad paid a visit to the MITRE Rehabilitation Unit. During their visit the boys firstly discovered the background and history of MITRE from Dr Malcolm Crone, MITRE Secretary.
Craig McMillan, an ex spinal patient and Ballyclare high rugby player then told the boys about his accident, how he came to be in a wheelchair and the part MITRE played in his rehabilitation.
He reminded the boys that they were role models in society and commented, "This link with MITRE will be an investment in your future, as no one knows what the future holds. Some of you one day may be coming here for treatment".
Dick Milliken then spoke to the boys, urging the squad to direct some focus to this year's association with MITRE. He offered them a challenge to find ways they themselves could make a difference rather than simply lending their name and hopefully find their involvement fulfilling and worthwhile.
The boys then separated into four groups and toured unit, visiting the areas of Hydrotherapy, Sports Medicine, Ilizarov and the Spinal Injuries Unit. They spoke to the physiotherapists and patients, asking them questions regarding their accident and the treatment they receive at the MITRE Rehabilitation Unit. The boys found it shocking, fascinating and for the squeamish a little to much information!
